What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
