One 60-day cruise around Australia was terminated days after the death of an elderly female passenger who was stranded by the cruise liner on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been hiking on the remote island with other travelers from the vessel, but broke off from the party for a pause. The ship departed without her and returned later that day after the ship staff became aware the woman was unaccounted for.

An extensive rescue mission located her body the following day.

Officials are investigating the tragedy, in coordination with police and the official investigator.

The CEO of the shipping company announced that passengers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the cruise had been called off due to the "tragic passing and previous engine troubles".

Through an announcement, he further stated that passengers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to organize the return journeys of the individuals via specially arranged planes".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated announcement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Commander" banning any further travelers from boarding the vessel.

The representative said that they would visit the vessel in the port city upon its arrival.

The vessel initially left the coastal city on 24 October, and was just two days into the journey at the point of the senior passenger's passing. The remote island was the first stop on the journey.

Passengers on board - who generally pay tens of thousands of dollars to take part in the voyage - were taken there for a day trip with the option of trekking or underwater exploration.

Relatives Statement

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "shocked and distressed that the liner left the location after an planned outing without my mother".

Via her announcement, she described her mum as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a affiliate of a bushwalking club.

"Based on limited details we have been informed, it appears that there was a breakdown of care and common sense," she said.

She added that she wished the investigation would be able to determine what "the operator should have done that might have protected Mother's being".
