On the eve of his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is directly connected to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: From Appointment to Present

Arteta was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph within months. Yet, that early success is still his only significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” Arteta responded upon being asked about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the coming months as well to warrant that continuation.”

Saturday night brings the landmark with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced immediately following his hiring was confirmed.

League Position and Pressure

With trailing Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured over 100 injuries from the beginning of last season.

Arteta is tied down by 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver promptly.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, highlighting the ongoing need to justify his role. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you enter the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He added, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, while singling out the squad's dedication as most crucial. “At the end, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and give the maximum to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The squad approaches the upcoming game managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is anticipated to see him miss action for a few weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
