Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
