Our team is checking images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
