Emerging Foreign Policy Vision Identifies Europe's Fundamental Problem: A Supposed Lack of Racism?

Throughout his first term, commentators often suggested that Donald Trump's statements should be taken seriously instead of word for word. Yet, real-world experience suggest that this approach may have reversed the logic.

An emergent American strategic document coupled with multiple statements from administration officials, Trump proxies, and the former president have precipitated potentially one of the most severe crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

While Trump's earlier complaint focused on Europe's perceived refusal to pay for its own defense, his vision has now evolved into a far more alarming perspective.

Colored by racism and a staggering disdain for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the potential of societal collapse on a continent he barely knows and mostly viewed from a distance.

"A lengthy discussion lacking in clear ideological coherence is instead replete with another element: the confused fear of an older man confronted with demographic shifts."

A conspiratorial worldview, which has already influenced harsh U.S. immigration and policing policies, is now clearly to be informing the administration's prism of Europe.

The Racist Core

According to this logic, migration from developing nations causes a weakening of European countries, rendering them "feeble" under "stupid" leaders and paving the way for their eventual decline. This is an openly racist theory, with Trump and his circle making clear their support for nationalist movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of this race-baiting is not new, its meaning for the continent's defense are essential to grasp.

In the view of the president and his Maga acolytes—including billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all statecraft is fundamentally a deal. However, while the previous argument was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is fundamentally unworthy due to its embrace of diversity.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

In his interview, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin wants a weak Europe. Trump then declares Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures between the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at perhaps the most critical moment for Europe in decades, amid a devastating war in Ukraine and escalating Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv amid persistent threats of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

These developments requires a robust response from European leadership. While some figures, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been blunt in their pushback, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have opted for a policy of attempting to appease the White House.

Recently, the UK government declined to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.

They said, "He enjoys a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on cooperating with each to achieve better outcomes for the people."

The stark reality is that the president intends his words and says them repeatedly. The time has come to abandon the pretense otherwise.
