Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
