Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
