A Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Resellers

To celebrate the arrival of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside London's Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store stocked with exclusive merchandise. Fans can look forward to offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies that are drawing from the institution's aesthetic. For collectors, however, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. This shop will operate both the physical location to its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated volume filled with beautiful illustrations that show creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially like what an in-world scientist might publish after trainers submit their data, or a naturalist's journal might have created had the Galapagos teemed with flying-types instead of birds. A key appeal lies in the book's serious approach, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Special Card Different

It is common for The Pokémon Company special edition cards for big events and crossover partnerships. Many such promotional cards typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. The factor setting this latest museum card is its distinctly bigger dimensions. While precise specs have not been immediately shared, its distribution will certainly be strictly limited, with customers limited to just one card with each transaction.

Limiting Reseller Activity

Per a company announcement, a portion of the pop-up items will also be sold beyond the museum walls. However, broader availability will only be select retailers in the UK. Importantly, collectors cannot purchase this promo via the official web shop. While reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they're going to have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. For those unable to attend, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to Chicago in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases from the museum store and its online store, which covers these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the efforts of 400 scientists who are conducting studies and finding answers to the planetary emergency," it notes.
