During 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange lodging upon arrival, yet upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered the possibility of just sleep at the airport – but soon learned that airport, not like the one back home, does not operate 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, thinking I could pass those hours somewhere operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape for acing the admissions interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.

I must have looked confused as a woman saw me wandering around downtown and wondered if everything was alright. I shared my situation and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: one filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and safe to sleep.

With hindsight, I can appreciate the significant risk she undertook as a woman inviting a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to the potential danger. As a dad now, I am astonished she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of generosity. I hope the universe has returned her generosity many times over. We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
